Bruern 2nd XI kicked off their cricket season with a quick trip down the road to Abingdon Prep. The less that is said about the weather, suffice to say I did not feel the need for sunglasses or sun cream!!
Skipper Theo R lost the toss and Abingdon had no hesitation in bowling first. We were reeling on 5 runs for 5 wickets before Theo R and Jack W put on a superb 78 run stand to quieten the vociferous fielders. Jack W top scored with 25, Theo R scored 23 not out. Bruern posted a very respectable total of 103 for 9.
In reply, William B struck with the very first ball bowled for Bruern, and the first ball bowled by the 2's. He struck again in his second over to have Abingdon on 20 for 2 after 3 overs and had very tidy figures of 3 overs/2 wickets for 8 runs. The back up bowling did not really hit those standards and too many wides and full tosses were delivered to capitalise on this excellent start. Abingdon romped home with 5 overs to spare and 8 wickets in hand.
Plenty to work on but the boys' spirits never wilted, and their collective team attitude was superb. THAT is a foundation we can definitely build on over the season.
