Rugby: Upper Sixth XIII v Christ Church Cathedral School [H]

In our first home game, Bruern hosted a depleted Christ Church Cathedral due to illness. Luckily, we have a squad with depth, and we were able to lend 3 players to the opposition. Thanks to Alex DB, Rudy C(S) and Freddie D for agreeing to play for them.

We started a bit slow and were immediately hit with a raking run from the Christ Church skipper who ran the breadth of the pitch to score. This woke the boys up and they started to ruck and pass their way up the pitch with Chris E eventually scoring. Bruern then settled into playing to their strengths and scored two more tries as they began to assert themselves. There was some great work from our two scrummies Louis S and Max M as they controlled the lines and rucks to create scoring opportunities. One of the biggest improvements was how we tackled! There were some vital tackles made by Narayan B and Rupert N as Bruern were able to end the first half 4-3 up.

Christ Church came out fighting at the beginning of the second half and with two quick tries, went 5-4 up. This was a lead which they held until about 10 minutes before the end. Bruern were patient in their endeavours and were rewarded with 3 tries as the Christ Church defence eventually waned for Bruern to win 7-5 at the end. It was a great game and very enjoyable to watch.

My thanks to the great support from all the parents and also Mr Floyd for some great refereeing.
